IWAM-2019 marks the 11th International Workshop on Advanced Materials organized and sponsored by the Ras Al Khaimah Centre for Advanced Materials (RAK CAM). The objectives of the workshop are to have in-depth discussions on the fundamental science and applications of advanced materials, including nanostructured materials and nanotechnology, and to stimulate international research collaboration with RAK CAM in diverse areas ranging from chemical, electronic and magnetic materials to environmental, renewable energy and biomedical applications.
We particularly wish to welcome Professor Judith MacManus-Driscoll of the University of Cambridge, UK, and Professor Mohamed Eddaoudi from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, KSA, who have kindly agreed to join the RAK CAM Board. Both of them have attended several IWAM meetings in the past and we are delighted that they have agreed to make this important commitment to the future of RAK CAM. The program includes 22 invited talks by a group of world leaders in advanced materials who will address topics dealing with research that has the potential for the greatest impact on developing clean and renewable forms of energy, nanomedicine for improved diagnostics and therapy, and a clean healthy environment. This year we are featuring the second Dresselhaus Memorial Lecture, which will be given by Dean Emily Carter from Princeton University. Millie Dresselhaus was a founding Board Member of RAK CAM, and we were all deeply saddened by her untimely passing in February 2017. Millie was a passionate supporter of RAK CAM and was an inspiration to us all. We are grateful to the Dresselhaus family for agreeing that we could hold a lecture in Millie’s memory and we are thrilled that Dean Carter has agreed to join us. We are also delighted that the 2019 program will include the presentation of the first Sheikh Saud International Prize for Materials Science. This prestigious award, which is accompanied by a gold medal, a commemorative plaque and a prize of $100,000, has been created to recognize His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr al Qasimi’s dedication and support of RAK CAM’s mission to enhance the field of Materials Science in the UAE and the region as a whole. We are delighted that this first award will be presented to Professor C. N. R. Rao, Honorary President & Linus Pauling Research Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore. Professor Rao, one of the world’s most distinguished materials scientists, has been a member of the RAK CAM Board since its creation in 2007 and has attended every IWAM meeting since the first one in 2009. We congratulate Professor Rao on this important award and express our heartfelt thanks to His Highness Sheikh Saud for his inspiration and kindness. In addition to the lectures, 8 student talks and two poster sessions with 100 poster presentations are planned as an integral part of the workshop program. The synergism produced by bringing together more than 200 researchers and students from over 20 countries with research interests in diverse areas of the field of advanced materials is expected to enhance scientific collaboration which will take this field a step closer to realizing its enormous potential for the betterment of mankind. |
